Bunions Q & A

What causes bunions?

Bunions are abnormal enlargements of the joint at the base of your big toe. They form gradually over time if your big toe shifts out of proper alignment. This happens if you wear pointy or high-heeled shoes daily and your big toe gets pushed toward your other toes.

While ill-fitting shoes are often to blame for causing bunions — especially among women — they’re not the only contributors. Your risk of developing bunions increases due to:

  • Genetic factors
  • Arthritic conditions
  • Injury or trauma to the foot
  • Participating in certain sports, like distance running

In some cases, a similar condition occurs in your baby toe because of the same underlying factors. When a bony bump forms at the base of your little toe, it’s known as a tailor’s bunion or bunionette.

Should I see a podiatrist for a bunion?

Yes! Even if your bunion doesn’t seem to bother you much, it’s important to have a thorough bunion evaluation. Bunions are progressive, and without early intervention, they can turn into a seriously painful condition that affects your daily life.

The caring practitioners at Apple Podiatry Group encourage you to schedule a bunion exam if you experience:

  • Painful corns or calluses
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Burning, stabbing, or throbbing
  • Redness, swelling, or inflammation

If left untreated, a bunion leads to toe stiffness that’s so severe it restricts normal foot motions. This may force you to change the way you walk, which can lead to knee, hip, and even lower back pain.

Before your bunion progresses to this point, see how the podiatrists at Apple Podiatry Group can help.

How are bunions treated?

Your bunion treatment will likely include several different types of conservative therapies to relieve pain and inflammation. Apple Podiatry Group provides:

  • Custom orthotics
  • Corticosteroid injections
  • Padding, strapping, or taping
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

Your dedicated podiatrist also talks with you about proper footwear.

If these conservative bunion treatments aren’t enough, your podiatrist at Apple Podiatry Group may recommend surgery.

Bunion surgery, known as a “bunionectomy,” is a minimally invasive procedure to correct your toe joint, remove the bunion or damaged tissues, and fuse bones together.

You don’t have to live with bunion pain anymore once you get started on treatment at Apple Podiatry Group. Book your bunion evaluation either online or over the phone.
